I'm kind of into Jeffrey Smart

Recently, I enjoyed watching an Australian painter Jeffrey Smart paintings, which is in someways has changed my perspective how to shoot in color, haven't said yet his paintings can be a good reference for someone who wants to shoot in color. His paintings is all about color, scale, spaces, human figures with their clichés, and composition as opposed to realism. Jeffrey Smart paintings also has power to urbanise the non-urban landscape. Essentially, Smart give the viewer a sense of scale or to the architecture in his images, which is has touched me down and I feel new worlds of observation opening up for me.

It was yesterday when I saw snow for the first time in my life. "Bloody oath! real snow!" I said excitedly, not the man made, not from the travel agency post-cards. Traveling with my classmate, I went to Perisher according to Wikipedia is Australia's largest skiing resort. It is located in the Australian Snowy Mountains in the southeastern corner of New South Wales, in the Snowy River Shire, about 600 kilometres southwest of Sydney. I was so exhilarating, by the view, the snow, the mountains, the cold, and other things that I can't expressed in words.

After being invited, last Saturday I attended a panel discussion with Ricky Maynard at MCA (Museum Contemporary of Art) in Sydney. Ricky Maynard is one of the best Australian Aboriginal documentary photographer. Born in Launceston in 1953, Maynard is self-taught in documentary photography and based on Flinders Island in the Bass Strait between Tasmania and mainland Australia. His ongoing documentary of the physical and social landscape of his people forms a culturally significant visual record and representation of Aboriginal people in Australia.

As I expected, the discussion was very inspired. He discussed many important aspects in documentary photography as well as provides guidance for emerging documentary photographer who wants take a further step, by discussing his own career.

Right before the end of the panel discussion he encouraged us to shows and presents our project or current project that we still working on, and the good thing is he did a photo critiques. For me, I showed him my ongoing (just affirm unfinished) 'Bantar Gebang' project. He likes my photographs a lot, though he still did a bit photo critique.

Last Wednesday I went to the one of cheapest bookstore in Sydney named Basement Books, I bought an interesting Photography book by Ingeborg Tyssen with $9.95 (hardcover format, 207 pages and 9 3/4 x 14 1/2"size ) which in Rupiahs is only Rp 80.000. I'm surprisingly amazed because the price before was $65.00 so without think twice I took one (even at the time I have no idea who she is?).
This book really made my day, though I've learned something from this, art is tough on the other hand art is selfish.
